When he returned to the clubhouse in the spring, Russell brought along a large binder full of Pokemon cards and found a unique way of sharing his hobby with his teammates. Russell will pick out Pokemon cards for his teammates to sign, based on the card's description and how they fit with the player.
In an interview with the Athletic earlier this week, Russell explained his process. "Each card is different and each player is different and brings something unique to the plate," he said. "I analyze, see what I see and pick out some rare cards. The only cards I get signed are the rare ones because I think we’re all rare players. So I get them to sign whichever one I feel is a good fit."
So far, Russell has had Kris Bryant sign his first edition Charizard card, Anthony Rizzo to sign a Pikachu, and John Lackey sign a Mega Houndoom-EX card. Russell has even recently expanded his hobby to his opponent's locker rooms, sending clubhouse attendants to opposing teams with a box full of Pokemon cards to get signed.
While Russell hasn't got any of his teammates into Pokemon cards, he claims that several of them are interested in collecting. Some of his cards even made their way into the national spotlight, when fans noticed a page of cards hanging from one of his teammate's lockers earlier this summer.
